Content use

Many Wikipedia images can be reused, including commercially. Each file has its own license; appearing on Wikipedia does not make an image copyright-free.

Check the image

Open Export → Image credits for creator names, licenses and file links. Read the original file page for its full terms and required notices. Public-domain files generally have no copyright attribution requirement, but credit is useful. Copyright status and other rights can vary by country. Wikimedia’s reuse guide.

Keep the credits with the poster

For CC-licensed images, include the creator, source, specific license and license link, supplied notices, and any changes. CC BY-SA also requires adaptations to use the same or a compatible license. A credits page cannot replace an individual image’s terms. CC BY-SA 4.0.

Download the separate credits page alongside your PNG or PDF. Open it to print or save as PDF. When sharing, keep credits accessible with the poster, such as in its description, an accompanying sheet or an accessible credits link. The poster itself stays free of added credit text.

Non-free images need a separate basis

English Wikipedia also hosts copyrighted images used under fair use. That use does not grant permission for your poster. You need permission or a legal exception that applies to your own use; a credit alone does not resolve this. Wikipedia’s non-free content guidance.

Captions and other rights

Wikipedia captions are generally CC BY-SA 4.0 text. Credit Wikipedia contributors through the article link, retain the license notice, and indicate changes. Additional source notices may apply. Wikimedia’s terms.
